My colleague here Jess Reia, Assistant Professor of Data Science and a Faculty co-lead at the Digital Technology for Democracy Lab, is hosting the Taking Tech Back series.
The Taking Tech Back online talk series brings together leading scholars, advocates, and practitioners to discuss the intersections of technology, democracy, human rights, and activism. The goal is to critically examine how technologies that are not serving the public interest can be re-built, re-framed or discontinued, while exploring pathways for more inclusive, rights-focused tech governance frameworks.
The inaugural session, “Taking Back AI Governance,” will be held on November 11 at 11:00am EST. They will discuss the current state of international AI governance and identify the main issues in how we build, deploy, and govern AI both within and beyond the US. Three keynote speakers will join: Sareeta Amrute (The New School), Seyram Avle (University of Massachusetts, Amherst), and Jeff Doctor (Animikii Indigenous Technology). The event is online and registration is free.
The TTB talk series is always online, free, and open to the public. The discussions will be in English, but they can facilitate questions in Portuguese, French and Spanish.
Upcoming sessions include topics like data centers, intimacy, organizing, social media, the right to the city, accessibility, freedom of expression and informal work.
